When choosing a driving school it's important to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed choice. There are many things to consider, not least of all, the price of learning to drive and how that fits into your budget.
Whoever you decide to learn to drive with, there's one question that you can ask that will protect you from paying too much money on test day. That question is...
"Will there be a surcharge for taking my test with you?"
What does this mean? OK, allow us to explain. Taking your test is expensive enough without having to pay your driving instructor a premium fee for use of their car.
During your test you will be driving for approximately 35 - 40 minutes, so if you include the time it takes for your examiner to debrief you and the time needed for your instructor to drive you home (hopefully with a big smile on your face), the total time the instructor should be charging you for is an hour. There's no extra insurance to pay or any kind of extra cost to the instructor, in fact all they have to do is sit in the test centre or their office and wait for you to come back!
Of course, most people choose to have an hour lesson before their test to warm up which brings the total time up to 2 hours. Maybe more if you want an hour and a half lesson before your test. The point is that while you're on your test, you should only have to pay for an hour.
So as you are making enquiries with various driving schools for prices and information (something that we recommend) to see which offers a service that feels right for you, ask the question above and take the answer into consideration. You may want to ask what the extra 'test charge' over your normal hourly rate is for.
